Timeshare scams in Mexico increase every year. Before buying a timeshare in this country, know the frauds that are being committed there

Vacationing in Mexico can be a great experience, but this experience can become terrible if you are not aware of the timeshare scams that are being committed in this beautiful country. Timeshare scams in Mexico are the order of the day, every year, according to PROFECO (Mexico’s Consumer Protection Agency); there are thousands of cases of people who were cheated by fraudulent timeshare salespeople.

Vacationers are approached everywhere to be invited to a free breakfast, which is actually an invitation to attend a timeshare sales presentation. Timeshare presentations can be long-lasting and very high-pressure. During the sales pitch, people who already own a holiday ownership are told that in case they don’t want their old timeshare anymore, they could easily rent it or sell it, to support this affirmation, most resorts work together with some timeshare resale companies, and Platinum Resort Services is one of them.

Platinum Resort Services

Platinum Resort Services is a timeshare rental and resale company. They claim to have over 50 years of experience in the timeshare industry and to have a supreme knowledge of global markets and vacation ownership resorts. Even when they assure to have many years of experience, their website was registered on March, 2011.

The company has a B- BBB rating; however, there is an alert on the business. Based on the BBB’s investigations, there are reasons to believe that Platinum Resort Services operates from an offshore location. According to their website, their offices are located at Minneapolis, Minnesota. They offer resale and rental services. As not everyone is interested in buying a timeshare, the majority of their clients are impulsive buyers and timeshare owners who are satisfied with their membership.

Companies they work with:

Puerto Bahia Villas & Spa
Playa Grande Resort

Marival Resort and Suites
Paradise Village

Complaints about the company

Most timeshare resale companies ask for an upfront fee to sell your timeshare, and Platinum Resort Services is not an exception. They charge an initial fee of $900 USD, but they do not guarantee that your timeshare will be sold.

Some Platinum Resort Services consumers have reported that the company does not respect the terms of the established contract, and that they do not receive the payments promised, or such payments are delayed.

Being that their old timeshare was never sold, most timeshare owners who have used the services of this company end up owning two shared properties, which means they have to pay more timeshare maintenance fees.

More complaints have been reported in the following websites:

Tips to avoid being scammed:

  •  It is very important that you know your timeshare cancellation rights before purchasing a timeshare in Mexico.
  • We highly recommend that if you don’t have the intention to buy a timeshare, do not attend timeshare presentations, since they can be very high pressure.
  •  Never pay an upfront fee in an effort to get rid of your timeshare.
  • During the presentation, asks as many questions as possible.
  • Do not provide your credit card information.

People should be very cautious about anything that sounds too good to be true. Timeshare salespeople can give lots of beautiful promises without confirmed written documentation; do not believe everything you hear from them.

Unfortunately, 99.9 percent of timeshare resale companies AND “recovery” companies are fraudulent. A large portion of them have been shut down and quite a few others are under investigation by the attorney general. The worst part is that some of the owners of the resale companies actually own the recovery companies as well. It’s absolutely upsetting. I work for one of the only companies in the nation that actually gets money back for companies. Do your research!! And UNDER NO CIRCUMSTANCES, give a company money up front. A legitimate company will never ask for money before services have been rendered.

I have worked with a few time share resellers and have found some to be dishonest while others were straight forward and honest. It took some time but I was able to finally have my property sold.

They have an admittedly false address in MN. The MN Chamber of Commerce says this "company" is not licensed in MN. We have a "contract" saying they're to purchase our timeshare NLT 30 Nov 2012 and no money's been received. I've only been allowed to speak to the receptionist and the salesman. Their customer service is email only. I believe they are a couple with an email address and just collecting broker fees. We got scammed into buying one timeshare with the promise of purchase of the other timeshare and guaranteed rental income. We got screwed.

Sometimes timeshares result to be scams, for that reason is important to kow how they really work.
Maybe, for families who are used to travel a lot are good, but for families who only travel ocasionally are not good.
If you want to buy a timeshare is important to inquire about them, because they aren't always what they appear.
