How to get rid of timeshare – Some reasons

The reasons why a large number of timeshare owners are wondering how to get rid of timeshare are as varied as understandable. There are an incalculable number of cases of people who have bought their timeshare properties under fraudulent, high-pressure sales practices. Unfortunately, most of these people have realized they made a wrong choice after the rescission period has passed, leaving them with a big problem.  These are some of the reasons that lead an owner to look for a way of how to get rid of timeshare:

  1. Annual Fees. - The first reason why lots of timeshare owners are looking to a great extent how to get rid of timeshare are the annual fees.  They have to pay a maintenance fee every year that goes from $450 to $750 USD. Beside the maintenance fees, some resorts charge a membership fee and assessment fees. If the owner belongs to RCI, he must pay a $99 fee and being that not enough, those fees do not stay fixed, but they keep on rising each year. To know more about this go to our article How much do timeshares cost.
  2.    Resell value. - One of the biggest lies told at a timeshare presentation is that if you reach a point where you’re looking how to get rid of timeshare, you could easily get rid of the timeshare just by selling it, and you could even make a profit of it.  A big-fat lie. The resell value is extremely low. One needs only to look at the timeshares listed on EBay, Craiglist or Redweek to see how low the resell value can be.
  3.   The weeks. - Timeshares are not for spontaneous travelling. You are limited to use it for a certain number of weeks each year, and most of the times in low season. If you are feeling that you need a vacation it is easier if you book a room in a regular hotel than trying to exchange your timeshare weeks. It is a hassle to deal with the resort and they will very probably charge you a fee.
  4.  Timeshare trades. - Timeshare salespeople dazzle their potential buyers by telling them they could vacation anywhere they want all over the world. What they do not tell you is that in order to trade your timeshare location the resort must be affiliated to the RCI, and that has an extra cost. Also, it is not an easy process to trade your timeshare location, and that makes that lots of owners feel frustrated even for trying.

  4.  Donate the timeshare

  5.  Give it back to the resort
There is no reason why a reason for the resort to take your timeshare back. First you have to pay the timeshare off, and you already did, they want you to keep on with the obligation of paying the maintenance fees.

We own with a timeshare company, and while I agree it’s not for everyone, it can be fabulous. This article deals only with the traditional “I buy a portion of a single property” timeshare. Most of the newer timeshares are more like investing in a company and I have options to spend my time at locations owned by my company all over the world, whenever I want, as long as I have the shares to cover it, and all properties are maintained to the same high standard.
I will honestly say it was not the smartest money C and I ever spent, but it’s also a purchase that I do not regret, not even a little bit.

In my mind it doesn't make sense. It is not an investment and it ties you down to yet another payment which may or may not make money. In fact it is not a cost effective way of vacationing. Why not have teh freedom of going whereever you want and not tied to your vacation investment?

What can you do if you were lied to at the time you bought the timeshare? We were told it would be paid for in 5 years then after that time were told it was only half paid for.

en mi experiencia personal, lo mejor que pueden hacer es llamar a una agencia de cancelacion de tiempos compartidos y dejar que ellos se hagan cargo

My family bought a timeshare in Orlando 14 years ago and it was paid in full. The maintenance fee continued to go up. so about two years ago we decided to no longer play the game; we refused to pay the maintenance fee. Not to mention, the company had planned a major overhaul of the place and had assessed an additional $3k to each member. We decided to run the risk on non-payment. We were threaten with foreclosure but the timeshare was paid for…we laughed and told them to go ahead. We did not answer any phone calls or letters until they decided to playball. That is , allow us to return the timeshare….for us it worked out….Several months ago we were asked if we would be willing to give it back and sign the deed over to them…And, we did. We were told there would be no tax ramifications, but even if there are, we are RID of the timeshare.
